Sandra --- 12 years ago -

I am a very light sleeper w/ pets and their moving around and need to go pee is waking me up early, I can't go back to sleep. I don't feed them water or food late. I also wake up repeatedly at night and usually stay awake for 5-30 minutes. I don't have a stress free life, but it's not enough to keep me awake. I have a comfortable bed and pillow, am not hot or cold, I just can't get back to sleep. The past 2 nights I've slept 3 hours each literally. Keeping the dogs outside is not an option, they're like our kids. Anyone have good advice? No I am not gonna drink into unconsciousness and I am not taking ambien or anything w/ prescription. I have tried Unisom and Benadryl which help me sleep for a couple of hours but I'm back awake shortly after. Melatonin gives me 25,000 strange dreams. I fall asleep very easily, because I'm tired but just can't stay asleep. This happens about 70%-80% of the time. Please advice!

I guess it would help to say, I regularly wake up at 2 am and 4 am for no apparent reason. Our alarm goes off at 5:30 and sometimes especially at 4 I feel anxiousness to fall back asleep and I think that may contribute to my not being able to.

OnARoll --- 12 years ago -

oh no i hope i didn't wake you up!!

Sandra --- 12 years ago -

Psh NO! I've been up since 5 just didn't txt back right away because phone was charging and I was doing laundry downstairs. When I sleep I put it on silent!

OnARoll --- 12 years ago -

it helps to "desensitize", bright lights won't help, but a medium background noise, and letting yourself feel drowsy in another room while the rest of the house is up can retrain you to tune out.... its a process i'm working on after a lifetime of bad sleep habits.

Sandra --- 12 years ago -

That's a good idea, I've also vowed to ignore the puppy(65lbs one!) when he jumps off the bed. I would normally take it as a cue that he needs to go pee but its becoming a bad habit. I took him out last nite at 2:15 and at 5:30 he wanted out again, wtf he used to sleep longer when he was younger. Then the grown azz dog hears any little thing and wants up, just to eat. Lately he acts like he's starving even though we feed him the same. He starts whining and wimpering by my sons door and I don't want him to wake him up so I take his azz out too, he used to sleep through the night too. With him, he's old enough to know I'm gonna walk him back to his bed. If he doesn't stop I'll just put him in the kennel, he's fine in there, the baby would whine all night.. I think I am also gonna stop feeding them first thing in the morning, maybe wait til 8. It'll be tough but we all need to be retrained.

kcsegypt --- 12 years ago -

Wow, your dog pees a lot. We take our dog out at 9 before bed and she doesn't go out until I get up the following morning around 8am. It's good to get your dog in a schedule so they don't wake you up to go out and dog's can hold their pee really well. We also only feed our dog at dinner time, but even if you do it twice a day only feed them at certain times so maybe 8am and then 6pm and stick to those times, they'll get used to it and you'll get your sleep.

Do you have any white noise? My husband can't sleep very well unless he has the fan on in our room.

Sandra --- 12 years ago -

That should help the problem of being awake before 5 but I need help staying asleep

Sandra --- 12 years ago -

I may do the fan thing! That's a good idea. We usually feed at 6am and 3ish, but I know he can hold it longer, he used to! I think he needs to learn to soothe himself back to sleep, like a freakin baby ugh i thought i was done with that stage of my life! They both are on that schedule. The puppy needs to eat twice a day as he's only 6 mos old. Right now I am getting a fan from the garage!

Try some vitamin D and have your levels checked by a DR, sleepytime extra tea it has valerin root *sp, kennel your pets at night, limit your computer use before bed and make your bedroom a room just for sleeping.

cocowgirl777 --- 12 years ago -

try some melatonin...its the natural brain chemical that makes you sleepy and helps you fall and stay asleep...you can buy 3 or 5mg tablets at most grocery stores in the vitamin area...works like a charm and just helps ur body to do what it naturally should.

cocowgirl777 --- 12 years ago -

oh...take it like an hr or 2 b4 u wanna sleep cuz it takes about that long to kick in normally.

Megan LeeAnne --- 12 years ago -

She's tried that, said it gives her weird dreams lol. If nothing works you may eventually have to take a sleep aid.

cocowgirl777 --- 12 years ago -

ahh...yeah if the melitonin doesnt work...white noise and getting on a schedual is all i could think of...best of luck to ya tho.

ArmyWife2010 --- 12 years ago -

tylonel pm. and we have a fan on all the time in our room.

Sandra --- 12 years ago -

Yeah melatonin gives me dream after dream that are weird and I wake up weirded out after each! My husband also suggested the Tylenol pm and I shall try one tonight.

Sandra --- 12 years ago -

Ok ladies (and Chris) the fan is installed, the drugs purchased and the tiny but bright modem lights are covered. I just need this hyper beast to calm the hell down so I can combine them all and hope for more than 3 hours if sleep!

HotFlashinMandi --- 12 years ago -

Hey you aren't alone though! I wake up at 3:34am almost every morning. The fan is what got me to go back to sleep. Or if it's REALLY bad I just start reading a boring book. Let us know how out works for ya!

Shelley S --- 12 years ago -

tylonel pm. and we have a fan on all the time in our room.

Exactly the same with me, no matter if it's cold outside or not, the fan is on.

Frankie --- 12 years ago -

I would say put the animals in a kennel or room. Our cat and dog stay in the laundry room at night, which is on the other side of the house, so we can't hear them. Have some white noise running. Someone mentioned fan and that works great for most. It will also help drown out other noises. I would suggest a warm bath with lavender oil at night. I wouldn't exactly take Tylenol or Advil PM all the time, but I would seek out some natural medication to help with sleep like Melatonin. Get into a routine and eventually your body will cooperate. If all else fails, see the Dr about what they can do to help.

Sandra --- 12 years ago -

Ok, well the fan worked the BEST! BUT, it drowned out the dog whining in my son's room at 4am so the dog woke up my son, so my son was informed that the dog is no longer sleeping with him, he cried as he is autistic and has a tough time with change, but it needs to be done. Because of his breed and the abuse he received as a puppy, he's neurotic and within 6 months last year, our other dog died, my son(whom he slept with) left for the AF, and we got the new puppy so the bad behavior of waking up in the middle of the night started. Our plan is to put him in my daughter's room, she's excited! He sleeps much better with her, and she's a heavy sleeper so she won't hear him. If that fails, then the next plan is to bring him in my room, he minds me! Last resort is downstairs in the kennel. The puppy did it like a champ, he woke up at 2 and stood by the door, we completely ignored him and 30 mins. later he laid back on our bed and went to sleep! The medicine worked well, and I'm finally excited about sleeping again. Last night was not perfect, it wasn't even good as I was awakened repeatedly, BUT, it was better so I'm hopeful! Thanks for the advice.

Try sleepy time tea?

Sandra --- 12 years ago -

Ok stupid question, does drinking that liquid make u wanna pee?

Frankie --- 12 years ago -

Tea makes everyone have to pee, lol. I drink a version of it and make sure I go to the bathroom right before I get in bed. I drink it and read which makes me even more tired. It's my routine, and a good routine always helps with sleep issues.

The only thing not mentioned it seems...
Could you possibly have ADD, ADHD?
Most of the symptoms in adult ADD are things like: hard time STAYING asleep, anxiety and depression.

Also not mentioned is talking to your dr. They could do a sleep study and see if something else is the problem.

BUt it sounds like the white noise and changing your dogs schedule is helping. And next time you wake up, resist the urge to get out of bed and pee. Everytime you do-you form a habit and then suddenly you find yourself waking up everynight to pee. This happened to my very healthy sister. Drove her nuts, and then she just forced herself to stay in bed and it was easily dissipated.

Leesah --- 12 years ago -

I think her dogs have to pee, lol. My cat peed a lot when she had an UTI. I didn't have to let her outside though. Maybe your puppy should see the vet if he can't hold it all night.

OnARoll --- 12 years ago -

last night i resisted the urge to go on LU in the middle of the night

Sandra --- 12 years ago -

Could you possibly have ADD, ADHD?

I am almost certain that I do!

Sandra --- 12 years ago -

And the puppy has been holding it the last 2 nights, we just ignore him and he lays down, the big dog hasn't been up at all, they just have bad habits, we're all better except my poor son who still doesn't want to sleep without the dog with him.

OnARoll --- 12 years ago -

:( he really has a sweet heart
