Just wanted to put a lil FYI out here to all. Several of us in Discovery Village have called over the past two mths to try to get help for an injured and starving abandoned dog. We were wondering why no one has stepped in to help with this dog, so today I called back as well as 4 other people who are concerned with the dogs safety and well being, but we were all told that there is no longer an Animal Control officer. Most of you may remember Cliff? The old man? Well they deleted his position. So now, for all of JBLM there are no animal control officers which I think is absurd, sad, and we really need them! At least one? Nope. no more. So many of us are going to try again as many times as it takes to catch this dog and get him the vet care he needs to make sure he is healthy, and find him a home. There is a posting up on BooKoo with his pic for anyone who lives in the Discovery area and know whose dog it may be. We assume he was abandoned by now. it's been 2 mths for Jimmeny(sp?) Crickets sake! He is extremely afraid, and sketchy.

That makes me sad. My husband worked at the PMO when he was stationed at JBLM and got to know him well. He genuinely cared about the animals, often going beyond what he was simply required to do for them. My husband always spoke highly of him. Did they delete his position because of budget issues?
What do they do about strays? Just let them roam? That is so unacceptable! Even little ole Fort Sill has mp's or even pest control who can get the pets and we even have a stray facility, what's wrong with JBLM?
NOt sure about the breed. He is a mutt(ir she) Looks possibly yellow lab/retriever mix? That's my wild guess. Defintiely NOT aggressive in any way. However, I do rescue and as most anyone who is in rescue kjnows, even the most timid dogs can nip or bite if they are scared or nervous, that's why I was trying to round up some experienced pros, but that's not going to happen. :( So I have a few people that volunteered to assist on our next attempt, however today, they flatted the mounds of dirt and spread them out on the field where he usually lays and sleeps. So I did not see him there 2 hours ago. I am sure he is roaming around the streets near the school as he never goes far at all. The construction site seems to be his comfort. I am assuming he lived here in the neighborhood with his family, but has since been abandoned. I initially thought maybe the recent storms spooked him since we don't get them often and many dogs have run off from the storm. But if my dog ran off, I would freak out , probably cry like a little wussy girl and be on a mad search, which I have looked everywhere and see no postings, or lost dogs fliers, even called the Humane Society no one has reported a dog matching this description.
As of right now, unless the stray animals, be it a cat/dog/etc., can be coaxed over to them to take in, they will not be chasing any animal. So they will be loose and free to roam the base.
They did send a unit out this morning right after I called to try to see if they could get him to come over to him. She did seem very sympathetic, especially when she said there have been so many calls on this same dog for so long. Without those who have been feeding him, he very likely would not have made it this long.
I'm think oh gawd, let me just order some Amazon monkey bamboo blow dart tranquilizers off ebay or something! lol I think we would be more successful! lmao
I better get back to my school work. i have so much homework today, but will be putting on some old clothes and boots and trudging out to find him Or her again. lol I can't just leave it. I would hate to let a mth go by and still see this dog, it's already been 2 mths. :(
Poor thing. If it were short hair I might could try and help. My husband is allergic to dogs but does ok with short hair (still allergic just not affected as horribly with short hair) I also have an infant and two young boys so I would be afraid that would be to much for the poor thing and it might lash out.
I cant take the poor thing in or I would! If anyone is interested in taking him in I have a few things I can give to help out if needed (if that's whats stopping you from stepping up. Here is what I have
** a bag of pro plan "savory" ** dewormer I can give a couple doses from. **a few treats ** couple toys **I MIGHT have a coupon for a free vet visit from banfield in petsmart (I LOVE them they are so awesome with our new pup and I plan on taking out cats there). Im not sure if there is an age restriction on it so I will look when I dig it out...
I know its not much but ill do what I can to help get the poor thing a home!
So sorry Sandra. I just saw your message and inboxed you back. I have been so tied up working on two papers for two classes tonight and still missed my deadline. :(
No problem. I'm sorry I can't take him either because if I didn't have my two large dogs and cat I sure would. The reason that I'm asking is that I would help take it to the humane society. Have you tried calling them? My heart breaks for animals, even more than for humans actually because they are so defenseless. That picture almost made me cry =(
Yes, they said it's out of their jurisdiction. I would not want to take him there either, they would more than likely put him down due to overcrowding. I was actually found someone within our rescue to foster him in Bothell. She normally only fosters shepherds, but she is super nice and willing to help, however I just got back in again and we have not seen him today or yesterday. I have several people on the lookout and they have my email and they have not seen him either. :(
Everything is flattened now at the school, nowhere for him to hide really, unless he goes under the trailer that they have, and he was not under there the 3x that we have driven and got out and checked the site. Today the workers were all out and that's normally when he is MIA, but the tends to come back, however, now with the dirt mounds that he slept on being flattened, I think he would more than likely find another comfort zone. I am really hoping someone nice actually caught him. That would be great.
Well I am here right now. He is balled up in the dirt again! :( I am on the main road closest to him. Hillside drive. He is very close to the fence. I need to go home and feed my people, then change. It really dirty. I need my boots. I know he will run I'm gonna try again. I dmailsd a few ladies that offered to help Mr try to catch him, but no response yet.
Hr looks at me and runs if I even call him. As long as I am quiet, he stays still. All I have with me is a leash but I need to come back prepared. I just happened to notice him when dropping my son off at the skate park.
Ugh I just came over here and showed my husband the pics. So freaking sad I want to cry. It's going to take at least 3 people to get him. So I emailed a few more people that offered, now I have my laptop, and my stupid phone sucks apparently. If anyone else would like to help, i literally live across from the school and could be there in minutes. So I am gonna wait and see if i have some help. i know I cannot do it on my own. He is too smart and fast.
This next one is an idea of what he is sleeping on each night. :( They spread out the dirt mounds, and there are still small piles here and there. This is where he seems to find the most comfort in. The dirt holds the heat so he lays on it.
The above pic is facing the back side of the CDC from Hillside Drive. There is an opening over there where the drive to the staff parkin glot entrance is. If someone can block that, I think we could get him. It's getting dark now though. I was over there a few times today and did not see him, so he may have been hiding under the office they have there(a mobile trailer) or out and about since the bulldozers were being used as well as the rollers to flatten the dirt out today. That can be very dangerous and scary for a pup.
