I was told that fleas are bad this year and all my pets seem to have them. I comb them everyday and gave them their flea treatments and one of the ladys who does pest control actually told me that I could give them 2 doses of flea meds a month and it won't hurt them if they are especially bad (only seems to be my one cat who has the worst of it). so I ended up having to do that. I've bombed my home once with that flea spray they have to use. Anyone have any good tips on keeping them at bay? We aren't noticing much activity except for the occasional one or two on the comb. Of course one or two means several others! Any advice?
I'm about to go to the bx to get this powder you leave on the floors for about an hour to keep them from getting to the carpeted areas (if they aren't already there) as much as I love my babies these types of things can be a HUGE hassle!
i used the powder on my carpets, and then just the kind of flea stuff you wash them with, and theres also some stuff you can spray in your yard, that we got and sprayed in ours and our neighbors, and since then the fleas have been almost non existent.
ok cool can I find that at the bx as well? I was wanting to wash my carpets but wasn't sure if that was something that might help with it too.. what do you think?
the powder should kill any fleas that are on the carpet, actually washing it probally wont do much more, you should be able to buy it at the bx but if not,id try walmart/petco,pretty much everywhere should have it.
Adam's flea and tick shampoo works the best and its cheap at walmart. I use it on my dogs cause it kills the fleas and their eggs. They came out with a spray to use on carpets and furniture that I tried this year and it works really well. Used it once in July and haven't had a flea since.

We had a huge flea issue about two years ago, it was absolute hell. No matter what we did we could not get rid of them, finally someone told me about 10 mule team borax. I got it at the commissary in the laundry aisle. I put it in my carpets, and furniture over night. I did it a few days in a row and after weeks of having those little buggers they were gone
There is some flea stuff by Raid, in a purple can that works really good. I spray my house periodically. I have an indoor cat but with the kids playing outside so much this summer and so many animals in the area, you never know!
Put corn starch (or even the Borax) in your vacuum bag/canister. Even if you vacuum up fleas, they can still live in there, but if there's corn starch (or Borax) it will kill them.
Are you using the flea treatment stuff you get at Walmart or the vet? Get the stuff from the vet, not the elcheapo stuff from Wally World. I know it is pricey but it works. My dog is flea free and so are both my cats. Once they get in your carpet, good luck. Hard to get rid of them. I wouldn't be putting the powder stuff on my carpets if I have small kids that crawl around on it. The residue stays behind even if you vacuum and it is a PESTICIDE. Your kids will ingest it.

I've gotten the stuff from the vet and the spray worked out for a little bit but one room was worse than the others (where I keep the cats mainly at night) and it still had an issue but they said that it was safe for pets/kids after the first 24 hours so I kept them in the kitchen for that period of time and had no problems after that with the whole pesticide thing.
I have been battling fleas all summer :( My cat got outside for maybe 10 minutes and it's been a nightmare ever since. I've used a fogger and I've been vacuuming, along with giving her a bath and she has been wearing a flea collar. I just found 5 of the young fleas on my legs this morning. I thought it was under control, but I guess it isn't. I went out this morning and bought some carpet and furniture spray. It sucks.

I feel your pain, I've never had this worse of a case EVER until we moved here. It's so annoying! Thank Goodness we keep the animals out of our bedroom so we have some sort of safe haven! ugh!
I vaccume every day and then clean out the canisters and all the who'sits and what'sits of the whole thing to make sure I've gotten it taken care of and that's daily, plus bathing our dog daily (which she doesn't seem to mind) and combing each of the animals. I don't bathe the cats that often but I do make sure they are combed thoroughly daily. I'm going to try the spray/bombing tho if the powder doesn't work. I'm sick of living with fleas ruling the house it seems
I use salton the carpet for fleas. Just sprinkle it on let it set an hour or sothen vacuum. Also, I use frontline. It helps but I still see the fleas occasionally my dogs when they come back inside. a friend of mine suggested washing them with Jhonsons baby shampoo and it will kill the fleas. The regular yellow bottle. I was amazed at the results!

This is what we have done in the past too, and it works! I dont even have pets right now and there were fleas in our carpet when we moved in here (Oklahoma, off post) and I went and got some and they are all now gone.
ahhhh...so I am having a flea problem too it seems. I have 2 cats that stay indoors 24/7 and we have a 2nd story apartment and we treat them monthly and i vaccum like crazy all the time AND YET it seems we still have them. I NEVER see them. But I have a toddler who will wake up in the morning and have bites on her legs and I know they are flea bites.
I am 6-7 months pregnant so really putting any chemicals down in the house is out of the question cause I have no where to take my toddler and 2 cats at the same time. Someone mentioned cornstarch...if I lay it down thick on the carpet would that work or the citrus spray...if I spray alot of that would that work.
One of my friends has her house infested with fleas, and we stayed there before we got our house. She doesn't seem to think it's a huge problem, but it really is. We have two big dogs and even after giving them flea medication before we went to stay there they got fleas. Surprise surprise. What we did to get rid of them when we moved into our own place was give them an EXTREME bath. The dogs skin was red afterwards, but it totally wiped out the bugs on their bodies. I suggest washing them, then isolating them in kennel or a room with no carpeting, bombing your house and yard, and then waiting a few hours. Hopefully that would do the trick! Best of luck, and I'm sorry you have to be living with that, I know firsthand how horrible it is!
between this and the lice post, im all itchy tonight!!!
i haven't actually seen any fleas on my pup, but im worrying now. i let him play outside most afternoons. i cant remember if hubby gave him his flea stuff or not, but i was scrubbing floors tonight and in the bathroom there were four little brownish bugs along the baseboard. not ants. is that what fleas look like? eww, im creeped out now!
fleas IMO look like knats only they jump not fly around. Super annoying little critters! I've officially gotten my flea issues under control. Just have to keep treating my animals daily i.e combing them etc...
I used some powder they sell at the bx and it works great and smells like fruit loops I think. Was an experience I don't look forward to repeating in a couple weeks. Good luck!
Don't use twice the flea meds on your pets. It really can kill them. It's why the flea treatment comes in packages by weight. You can wash your dog in Dawn dish soap, which will kill fleas. Put on the drops. Add some garlic powder to a dogs food, fleas don't like garlic (but don't add it to cats food, it can cause anemia in cats). Use the carpet powder or bomb the house (or both) and then do it again about 10 days later to kill anything left behind.
I've actually been told by my vet that you can give your pet a treatment every 2-3 weeks if nothing else is working IF it's not Advantage
I've been told this too. Also, when treating your pets, follow the instructions and wait 3-4 days after a bath, or do it 3-4 days before a bath. The oils on their skin help them absorb the medicine.
Omg I am having this issue and its driving me insane. I sprayed the yard and house and bathed the dogs and put 2 frontline within a week of each other and he has more fleas than ever before, only the puppy though. Does the borax stain carpet and can I use it outside
