Last night the kids were wound up and I couldn't take it anymore lol. So we drove to Starbucks and then took a nostalgic detour through our old neighborhoodÂ… and I saw a house decked out in Christmas lights. Full on blinking lights on all the windows, doors, and the frame of the house, a huge blow up Santa on the lawn, candy canes lining the walkways, and moving pre-lit reindeer pulling a sleigh. I'd like to say I couldn't believe it, but I can.

I keep telling hubby one year I'm going to put an obnoxious number of turkey decoys on our front lawn the day after Halloween lol.

Shelley S --- 11 years ago -

If it's on post, they have restrictions as to how soon people can put them up. I love your turkey idea lol

details --- 11 years ago -

Yeah, I don't think they enforce it across the board though. The house on the corner next to Beachwood elementary put up a blow up Santa and a snowman in October the last year we were at JBLM. They were there until after New Years. And the house a block down from them had a turkey flag and Christmas lights up at the same time lol.

I put my Christmas stuff up before Thanksgiving, usually the week of Thanksgiving day. This year however I'm pretty sure I'm gonna do it before then because we bought a whole lot of Christmas ornaments in Texas last year and I'm anxious to put them up hahaha! I love Christmas and the spirit of the whole thing, even if I don't get a single gift!

ColoradoNative --- 11 years ago -

Nope, they don't really enforce it, or they enforce it unevenly. I lived in Greenwood and most people had their Halloween stuff down by the 16th of Nov (when we were told we needed to), but one family got a notice because a few things got left out a day late... but there were a few houses on the other side of post (really large, nice ones...) that had Halloween decor - not just generic "fall" decorations, but ghosts and jack-o-lanterns and Happy Halloween signs - out until into December.

Oh I like the Christmas spirit too! I just don't like Christmas up in my face everywhere I go for the last three months of the year. I get burned out by the time the actual day gets here. And unfortunately for a lot of people it's more about what they're buying and what they're getting then the Christmas spirit.

Samba --- 11 years ago -

I'm ready for Christmas lights! ;) I just packed away all my Halloween decor for next year and going through to see what we have, what we will add, or what we might need to replace if anything for this years Xmas decor.

gtaylor --- 11 years ago -

We put our tree up last night. :) I absolutely love christmas time. There is something about this time of year that literally makes me feel more joyous. I love the glow of the tree lights in the dark living room, it just warms my heart. I know it may seem a little silly but its just how I feel.

I think if my kids were still kids and not adults with no kids of their own, I would enjoy the season a lot more. I will put up a tree, but will probably be the Friday after Thanksgiving. We just don't go all out like we used to when they were young.

Frankie --- 11 years ago -

I refuse to put up anything Christmas related until the day after Thanksgiving. One holiday at a time please. We went to Hobby Lobby on Sat and our daughter (5) is having an issue with a the stuff being out. It was out before Halloween and she was really annoyed by it. Lol. Love that kid!

Sandra --- 11 years ago -

That's where I'm selfish, if my azz is gonna work, then it better be up for a long time!

Megan LeeAnne --- 11 years ago -

Haha...Christmas stuff at hobby lobby was out in like august.

I'm excited to decorate this year bc we have a big house and stairs and lots of places I can decorate lol. But it doesn't happen til the day after thanksgiving.

This year I am getting in the "holiday spirit" I cringe a bit thinking about giving in to the corporate greed.....but as long as I do not shop at walmart, it will be alright. I am going big!

corporate greed.

Having holiday spirit doesn't mean giving in to the corporate greed necessarily. If you go and buy thousands of dollars 'for the holidays' then you do because that's not what the holidays are about. If that were the case, then buying anything would be giving in to the corporate greed.

Your mom...BRILLIANT!!!!!

I just remember hearing stories of people getting TRAMPLED on in walmart around the holidays......omg.

Shelley S --- 11 years ago -

Yeah I dont do black friday shopping ever, nothing out there I need so bad as to have to fight over it

Neighbors down the street just decked their house out in Christmas decor today. I walked outside tonight to see all the lights and had my "wtf, it's not even Thanksgiving yet" moment.

I hated having to stand in line in the cold and rain. My husband loved it. Just because. They have made it easier by opening at 10pm instead of 5 so there is no waiting outside. Still, this is my husband's cup of tea, not mine, he and my girl always have a mapped out plan of which stores they're hitting and in which order. I stay home with the boy!

Frankie --- 11 years ago -

Proud to say I have never gone. It's just nuts to me.

Bingo. This is exactly how I felt when I saw the lights in my old neighborhood.

I never do Black Friday shopping. Besides the crazy crowds and lines and potential for violence, there is nothing on earth I need badly enough that it's worth seeing someone give up their Thanksgiving for.

Frankie --- 11 years ago -

@Details- I'm glad we're on the same page here. ;-)

They'll have to give it up whether I go or not and a $199 laptop will do it! hehehe, not that I've done it, but I've seen it done.

But seriously, I'm not the black Friday person so don't hate on me, just half of my family is =/

MOproblems --- 11 years ago -

Say WHAT??!!!
$199 laptops?!????!!!!

Sandra --- 11 years ago -

Yup I saw it a few years ago at the PX, we just weren't looking to buy laptops then so we didn't. They give tickets based on how many they have so if you sit there early you'll get one. MO, you interested in feeding into the corporate greed hahaha
