So...our power went out this morning and I had heard that through usaa they will replace the groceries after a certain period of time. 1. Is this true? 2. How long does the power need to be out in order to make the claim? I think it's been out for a while. The milk is warm and everything has a sweat. All I have was milk, fish and hamburger meat. All stuff that has to be kept cool!

Yes they will , I believe it's up to $500. I'm not sure how long it has to be out for though. When we had that big snow storm a couple of years ago, we were without power for just under 5 days and my husband called them. I took pictures of everything we had, but they jusy asked how much our stuff was worth. We had money in our account within 24-48 hours.

Are you on the NE Merktdawg072? Our power was out for about 3 hours, came on 45 minutes ago. As long as you leave the fridge doors closed your food should keep for like 6 hours or something..lol

Merktdawg072 --- 11 years ago -

Yeah ours just came back on Amy, but everything was warm when I went to make breakfast. I have the fridge on the coolest setting and normally my milk is frozen today it was Luke warm. :(

Agree with Amy...if you keep the doors closed or only open them a few times during an outage the food should be fine. If the power is out for an extended time then your renter/homeowner insurance will pay for the amount of groceries lost.

A few years ago the power in Lakewood went out for 3 days and we filed. Got a check within a week for about $500

Kristie528 --- 11 years ago -

What if you happen to leave the freezer door open? No power outage or anything...

Frankie --- 11 years ago -

If you leave it open and ruin your own things then I'd say that's a no go and you would be at fault since it could of been prevented.

Fridge info

This may help. As far as insurance purposes I think it was around 1 full day before you could do a claim I would call them though. This is why we don't open it period when the power is out.

I was in the same situation as BDom, but be careful because you're filing a claim, and your premium can go up. Ours did, and when we were getting quotes from difference insurances companies for Home Owner's, it really hurt us. Our home owners insurance is 40% higher than it should be right now because of that one claim. So only do it if you really need the cash for food.

Merktdawg072 --- 11 years ago -

We've never had An issue with our Premium going up. We've filed a few claims for various reasons...one being recent and our bill actually went down 40 bucks :)

Merktdawg072 --- 11 years ago -

The power came back on and everything is good now. I would have filed a claim though regaurdless of needing the cash or not. I have a full fridge of food and that's a lot of money to just shrug off.

Kristie528 --- 11 years ago -

I left the top of my deep freezer open the other day...guess I should toss the stuff.

I filed an auto insurance claim through USAA once and my premium never went up. But when I was shopping around a few of the potential new companies mentioned that claim forced them to raise their quotes. I guess if you're going to stick with the same company you're probably fine. Glad your power is back on!

Megan LeeAnne --- 11 years ago -

In that research I found a few people complaining how they had been with usaa for several years with no claims then on story had 2 claims in 3 years and the other 3 claims in 3 years after being with them 20 years and they just automatically got dropped. USAA's excuse was they drop people with more than 2-3 claims bc that's how they keep their insurance low. That amazed me. We don't use them bc they are outrageously expensive for some reason and I have great credit and no accidents for car insurance and they couldn't give me a reason why. They wanted $378 a month for car insurance...I said hell no and went with progressive and paid $70 a month for the same exact coverage.

Frankie --- 11 years ago -

Jeez, we pay 100 a month for car ins for two vehicles.

Megan LeeAnne --- 11 years ago -

Yeah...this was a few years back...but I still wont go back to even ask for a quote. I have since them added my husband and his truck and pay $114 for both.

Your Mom --- 11 years ago -

do glass claims affect premiums?

That's insane. We're with Progressive too for auto. We used to have USAA but switched for a whole bunch of reasons.

Your Mom --- 11 years ago -

we have aaa and pay 140 for 2 cars and renters

Megan LeeAnne --- 11 years ago -

That's about what we paid when we had renters included but we dropped it.

Leesah --- 11 years ago -

Yeah, I should have clarified that the reason we were looking at different insurance rates is because I was going from renters to home owners. USAA turned out being cheapest for us, but it was still higher than most people pay, and it's because of that one stupid claim, lol.
