Hey ladies. Aside from MyCAA and the Montgomery/Post 9/11 GI Bill, what are some financial assistance avenues that some of you have successfully ventured through to get some funds for school?

Hubby's GI bill is his. We've both established this, and have agreed that HE will use it for his schooling when he gets out (he's in the process of being med-boarded now, and has extensive educational plans. YAY!). I've used up most of MyCAA already, and am waiting around for them to approve the last bits that are left of it, but I'm starting school again next month, and haven't successfully come across anything promising as far as scholarships go.

What are some of your favorite places to apply, and have you ever been awarded any of them? I'm totally for writing essays and all that, so that's not a hiccup in my capabilities/willingness. I'm just curious as to what sites are actually worth applying to. I've been applying like a mad-woman for months to various scholarships to no avail. :( Help?

Washington has a state need grant. Not sure how to go about applying. I applied for my school and it was automatically given to me when I applied for financial aid.

That's if the school is in Wa right Megan?

I did not apply for the state Need grant but just checked my aide status for the University of Washington and i qualified to have my ENTIRE tuition covered by it. So I would ask your school how it works and what is required to get it. I didn't know I had and am now ear to ear smiling.

Maui if you're GPA is high enough you are more likely to get better grants AND More FA. If it is not a higher GPA....work your rear off for a few semesters. Then apply all over again. Look into tutoring and homework clinics. You want them to want you. The way you do that is by being top of your class.

I don't qualify for the need-based grant because my school is a distance college in New Mexico. I'm doing my schooling completely online, not counting the on-the-job training/credits I'll receive in the process.

MO, I screwed my GPA into the ground leading up to and following my father's passing. I should have stepped away from school once it started to affect me, but I kept signing up, and kept withdrawing and/or failing my classes. So needless to say...yes, I am prepared to work my @$$ off now to make up for that.

I won't need the tutoring. I have my supervisor for that (she's a veterinarian). :) I feel very fortunate to have such a caring and supportive staff throughout this journey. It gives me more conviction in this being the right route for me and my goals.

Not getting financial aid this semester isn't a HUGE deal right now, because the school did offer me an in-state tuition due to hubby's active duty status, and I'm only pursuing PT school right now. My total for the semester came out to $330. Not a big deal. But I could use the help for the books and all that jazz, ya know?

Anyways, thanks for all the pointers gals! Keep 'um coming!

One of the most important lessons of life (in my opinion) is to know when to quit, when to walk away and the difference of those two things. You walking away from school during that hard time would not have been quitting. Not finishing classes, incomplete assignments or simply not studying enough is quitting. Now you know. You will be a better student for it. Good luck to you in your education.

I think it is for schools in Washington only. I attend Everett Community College. With that grant and financial aid I qualified to have my whole schooling paid for and still receive a lump sum back each quarter.

Thank you MO. Yes, it was hard lesson learned, but I know I will be a much better student because of it. I completely agree with your sentiments. At the time, I thought stepping away from school would be a mistake because I was receiving benefits from my father's 100% VA mental disability, which only lasted until I reached 26 years old. Everyone, my mom included, didn't want me to miss out on my benefits, so I tried to push through. It inevitably was a huge mistake because I was so busy trying to please everyone else that I forgot to take care of me.

I have since had to repay some of that money since I obviously did not meet the minimum standards for GPA, which is okay. The VA has been more than gracious in working out the particulars with me. It was a low point in my life that I am grateful for experiencing, only because I'll know how to identify and prevent myself from getting there ever again. It's all a growing experience. Every bit of it. :)

Megan, that is freakin awesome girl! Good for you!
