For those that have had the bypass how long where you in the hospital for after the surgery? I go in on Monday for it bit am coming over from Wenatchee for it so we are trying to figure out many days we will be there.
I was in the hospital for 2 days. Released on the 3rd. But its different for different people. It all depends on pain control and how much you are getting around etc
I have had it done and it's been the best decision of my life. I had a herniated disc after having my daughter and because of the pain and the complications that came from having a damaged disc I ended up gaining like 60 lbs in five months. It was horrible and my PCM told me "Honestly you're 5'5 and tipping the scale at 300lbs. Your BMI is HALF the size of that!" so he recommended I take the option of Gastric Bypass into consideration, so I can heal faster if I do it with diet and exercise, I refused pain meds because I have a little girl to take care of and I didn't want to be a zombie and be drowsy all the time.
It's been 8 months since I had the RNY, laproscopy done. I've lost 134lbs in 8 months, I didn't expect to lose that much in such a short time but i was dedicated to being healthy. I'm 15lbs away from my BMI and I feel amazing!
I'm sorry I'm just now getting on here! Way to go Tange! You look amazing!
For me I had mine done April 9th and as of now I am down 78lbs. I had mine done while my husband was deployed and I was home alone with 2 boys ages 4 and 5 so it was a tough transition at first. I didn't think it would be as emotional as it was but I wouldn't change it for the world. I still have a ways to go but I'm still chugging along. Started at 235 and now I'm down to 157 which I have not been since high school. Good luck! If you have any questions or need a buddy feel free to pm me!
Thank you ladies. I'm hoping that it this will help with the lower back and foot pain that I am having. Monday can't come any sooner it has been a long process to get here.
I had an Open sleeve on Aug 28th. I went in on Tuesday & was released on Thursday. Everyone is different & as long as there are no serious complications, you should be out in 2-3 days (they don't count day of surgery)
Tange! you look AWESOME!!!!! I did meet you before on a couple of occasions, and I had the surgery(same as you RNY) 13 mths ago and lost 101 lbs so far. You were absolutely beautiful before your surgery always a very outgoing funny personality, but now...NOW? Oh my goodness mama, you look AMAZING!!!
treyWilliamsmommy, it should help your back pain and your foot pain as well. I have two herniated discs in my back from a horrible car accident in 2003, as well as double foot fractures from wearing heels every day for over 7 yrs, and sports. I rarely have back pain, but if I do it is way less severe than it was in the past. I had Dr. Martin and he was amazing. I was also in for 2 days, then released. My husband deployed shortly after my surgery and was in shock when he returned at the weight loss and difference.
@Tange you look good the average stay is 2 days. I had it August 2007 started at 394 and now am down to 184 I have started to lose again. I just finished the last leg of the journey a tummy tuck. I am a rare case but everything went to hell and back both surgeries. We have 6 boys from my husband schedule, to surgery and beyond it was crazy. So be prepared. But will all the complications and craziness of this I would do it a gain in a heartbeat. It's life changing and an amazing roller coaster of a ride. If someone tells me how to post pics I will.
@myopinion totally off topic - Do you want your crockpot or not? LOL It's in a bag with some McCormek packets. Don't deprieve yourself for not having a crockpot girl!
This was my experience after the surgery. The surgery went smooth thank god but I had to deal with what they called "ketosis" for two months. You experience that when you're body is trying to adapt to eating less than 500 calories a day. I always felt like I was "dying" for water, dry mouth, feeling nausious and having bad breath. Yeah not so pretty lol. But don't be alarmed, you won't experience that for long. You're body will go back to normal after its done adapting to the radical diet change. What helped alot was adding more sodium to my diet to combat the symptoms. Like ramen noodle broth and ketchup (not those things together lol ew but I hope you get the idea), if you can tolerate it, try it, it helps alot.
Also the doctors don't recommend one specific thing for the vitamins, there is a bunch of stuff out there like the bariatric advance chewable vitamins, all I have to say after spending the dough on that is YUCK! I got something even better which I wished I would have gotten from the beginning and not wasted tons of money on all that other stuff. Vitafusion - They are gummies, don't confuse them with the flinstone vitamins those are not good enough to take after having the Gastric Bypass. The Multi-vitafusion are better formulated and omg they taste so good I have to stop myself from eating more than two lol. Below is a picture of what it looks like, I suggest getting that along with another bottle of specially formulated Vitamin D. I've had three blood works done and everything has come back awesome with no deficency issue.
Now, the other downside of the surgery is having to deal with the tremedious amount of hairloss. My doctor told me, don't even bother to take Biotin Vitamin to replenish your hair because the loss won't stop until you stop the rapid weight loss. Only then would the Biotin vitamin help repair back what you've lost. I was lucky to start out with a lot of hair but some women who already have thin hair have gone bold. I know its scarey but don't worry like I said that's temporary too. My neighbor , although I didn't need it, took me to a place that actually sells these amazing affordable beautiful wigs! If you do end up missing your thick hair because of the surgery I suggest going through that route, its super fun and so easy to put on. Don't use the caps, just put your hair up underneath to make your head breathe and not over heat. This is one of the wigs I bought and I loved it, so did the hubby lol
Now if you haven't already joined this support group on facebook, I highly suggest it. It's an entire community of people especially from Fort Lewis who've gone through the surgery. You get great advice, recipes and a bunch of support.
I hope these tips and advices help anybody else who is seriously thinking about having the procedure done. GOOD LUCK! and I wish you the best. :)
oh and I was in the hospital for three days at Madigan. Two weeks later I ended up in the ER because I had this burning searing pain that no amount of pain meds would kill if you experience that just know it might be where the camera port entry was made during the surgery 7 out of 10 people experience that especially if they cut through muscle. I felt it for two weeks straight, it hurt super bad but I lost 40 lbs in the first month and my stomach was the first to shrink and that's why I ended up experincing that but I never felt it again.
@Katena - if you have your picture uploaded on facebook, right click the pictures properities copy the link, then when you post it here as you can see on your right hand side of the comment box there is a bunch of icon options to choose from click on the one that has circles and squares on it. Post your copied link there and Whoala!
Tange Thank you for all the info.I have been to the support group at Madigan but I moved to Wenatchee 3 weeks ago and so far have not found one here, I tried to click on the one you posted but it comes up unavailable.
And I got my report time today I have to be in at 10:30 am that's going to make a really long day considering I can't eat anything after midnight the night before.
I almost WISH I had one of these before and after pics. Just because it would be such a great encouragement to others. I have always taken care of my body though thus keeping my weight in line. Tange I'm a HUGE flipping fan now. I think that was a bold gutsy move. That "fat" picture was HILARIOUS. And the new one.....hot mama.
Looking at the back label I actually don't see iron listed but for the first two months I had the gastric bypass I was taking an alone vitamin Iron along with a multivitamin. I got the chocolate chewable that was the only thing that wasn't horrible from the bariatric advantage line. It was good but honestly my taste buds just weren't tolerating chocolate at all.
The multivitamins in general though for whatever reason don't seem to have iron in them. I've noticed that almost in all of them.
undefined This is the exact one I have chocolate respberry truffle. You can have it if you like. It's just sitting in my medicine cabinet.
I forgot to mention, I was actually taking three different vitamins in the beginning that is important to do. One was a 30mg Iron, a Multivitamin and 315mg Calcium citrate all chewables.
I just had the gastic sleeve done at madigan this past tuesday dec 11th I was discharged friday am For me i had lots of pain and couldnt keep anything down ( liquids ) meds made me super sick too but now im doing better pain is getting less and less main thing is the gas ( bring gas x strips ) scale says im down 8 lbs already even though is water weight im still happy to see numbers going down Lol good luck just remember its hard te first few weeks its will get beeter I even told myself why did i get it done cuz of the pain but now im realizing nothing comes easy Lol no pain no gain..... GOOD LUCK
Please do not judge me for asking this question. Because I'm not judging you all. Why could eating healthy foods and a healthy amount while walking even just 30 mins a day not work? You gain weight from eating to much. And not working the calories off. Why resort to surgery to MAKE you not over eat?
I believe that obesity is an addiction to food. It's more powerful than any other addiction. Why? Because your body does NOT need alcohol, meth, or nicotine to survive, it does however need food. It's not as easy as 'just eat less and work out', it's like telling an alcoholic 'just have a glass of wine and no more'. Do you get it a little better?
If there was a surgery that made alcoholics get physically sick after drinking more than a couple of sips of booze, or drug addicts sick after snorting a line or two, trust me the lines would be going on for blocks to get it done!
