My dog has a pink rash all over her body. It's really bad on her legs and tummy. I took her to the vet a couple weeks ago and they prescribed her Amoxicillin and the antihistamine Chlorpheniramine for her itching. The rash went away after about a week shortly after the Amoxicillin ran out. I continued giving her the other whenever I saw her itching which stopped a few days after the rash cleared up. Yesterday I noticed it started to come back and now it is bright pink all over and she's itching like crazy, despite me giving her the medication.

When I took her to the vet the first time, she said it is probably just seasonal allergies and sent her home. I'm hesitant to go back there and throw out $100 for her to tell me the same thing and I'd like a second opinion. I thought it could be food allergies from what I've read online, but the vet said it isn't and i've been feeding her the same food for about 5 months before the rash appeared. So I don't know!

So after all that lol... I have two questions. Has anyone had a similar problem with their dog? And does anyone know a vet in the Lacey area they recommend? I currently go to Mountain View and I do love going there, everyone is great and I've never had a problem with them, I just think I'd rather pay to get a second opinion. Thank you so much!

how old is the dog and what type of food do you feed them?

sometimes as the dog gets older they develop an allergy to food they have eaten. all of my dogs had to be put on rice formula food bc of the allergies

This happened to my dog in FL, come to find out she was allergic to flea bites. For whatever reason, she doesn't get fleas here so I've never had to treat her for it. Over there, she was itching so bad, she was losing hair and getting scabs all over her body. :-( They vet prescribed some meds to address the allergy, and some anti-flea treatment, and she was all better. When we came back here, she never had the problem again.

I agree it's probably an allergy of some sort being that it was suddenly onset. Not saying it's the same thing, but definitely look into it.

She is almost 2 years old. I feed her Purina Beneful. I thought the vet would want to do some sort of food allergy trial but she said no and told me to continue feeding her the same food.

I give her flea treatment every month and haven't noticed any on her.

Can't decide if I should go back to the same vet, maybe since the rash came back she will look more into it or if I should just take her to a different vet. :/

And thanks ladies! :)

If you aren't treating your dog for fleas at the moment, think about starting. The fleas are looking for warm bodies as it's getting colder, and I'll bet if that's all it is, she'll clear right up. Apparently flea allergies are really common. :-/

Oh ok. Just read your response. :) Disregard previous statement. Lol

My dog has the same thing. I give him baths weekly alternating between Adam's flea and tick shampoo, its a little expensive but works really good, and johnson's baby shampoo. Also, bag balm for the itchy red spots, they can lick it and doesn't do nothing to them. Thats available at costco and farm stores.
As for a vet, you can google tanglewild vet, part of vca and if your pup has never been see there, their first visit is free. They are amazing vets and take great care of your dogs

Speaking of baths, I know oatmeal baths are supposed to work really well with alleviating itchy skin and rashes with people and animals. My mom's dog gets clammy skin, rash, itchiness, etc, and frequent oatmeal baths seem to help her overall comfort.

I am a vet assistant/dog trainer and see this on an everyday basis. There are SOOOO many things that could be wrong with your dog.

The thing you have to remember is that vet offices usually cost you a premium for exams. If you go to a new vet, you are going to have to pay for a "new pet exam" and start all over.

You should be able to go into your vet and not be charged for a "re-check." They might even re-fill your prescriptions for the antibiotic. Maybe your dog needs it for a little longer.

Just call your vet clinic, tell them that it's not working and ask them if they charge for a re-check. If they do, compare it to the "new pet exams" at other clinics.

Another thing is you should really consider changing your dog's food. Beniful is considered one of the WORST dog foods you can feed your dog. It has NO nutrients despite what the bag says. I've done study after study. Even though it's cheap, you can get a better quality dog food for just a little more. You get what you pay for, and in the end, it's your dog who pays for it. :) If you do decide to change his food, slowly transition it so it doesn't upset his tummy.

I know it's hard to diagnose your dog, but the only person who can, is your vet. Even with allergies, it's hard for vets to diagnose because they can send tests out to find out what it is, but it will cost you hundreds of dollars.

Shannyb, thats why I recommended her check out a new vet before she goes, VCA has free exams for new pets to their clinic. Alot of vets do that for the first time and I take my dog there and they are awesome.

My dog has a rash too on her belly. I took her to the Pet Doctor on Bridgeport Way yesterday and they said it was probably a Staph infection on her skin OR irritation from the woods by our house (she does her "business" in the weeds and woods). She gave me a topical Antibiotic spray and told me to use it for a week. The spray bottle is huge so I know that I'll have some left over if it ever comes back I won't have to take her again. The visit and spray only cost $64.

They are really great there. They got me in the next day after I called.

Good luck! Hope she gets better!!

sounds like some sort of allergy possibly something in the home/ around the home or in the food.
