Can you get PCS orders if your unit is fenced in? And what does fenced in really mean?

pinkprep4u --- 13 years ago -

My husband is in a fenced in unit and it means that he can not get a new assignment until they are no longer fenced in. We we're hoping to get out if here but learned that his unit is fenced in and on lockdown. I was told that it would be really hard to get orders so it would have to be a miracle basically.

Kathryn --- 13 years ago -

Yes it depends.... Here is our story with that BS:

My husband got home in August 2010 and was fenced in for six months after he got back, which we did not know. He called branch in Jan to see his options on getting out of here and was told he was fenced in until Feb. 17 to call back, and that he can not get put on orders until he fence is up. He called the Feb 18th and was told he has been on orders to Korea for two weeks. So it depends on what a hole you talk to at branch. He could not request a duty station but they sure as heck could assign him to Korea. We have now been in the Army 4.5 years and he has been deployed for two and will leave for another year in December. Super fun.

Ugh that sucks. I just need to give up ever getting out of here =(

to my understanding.... they can get orders but then their leaders here can get them pushed back to make them stay here longer. i do know of ONE persons situation where the the duty station he was supposed to report to faught for him to get there.

Ok...I'm an army wife of 7 years and this duty station is the first time I've heard "fenced in"......how is that different from being stop lossed?

Kathryn --- 13 years ago -

Fenced in and stop loss are way different! People in Joey's unit who did not re enlist to go somewhere else during the deployment, or one's who ETS was up were "fenced in" for 6 months after re-deployment. Stop loss would mean they were forced to stay in and deploy and that is not what happened. Our guys who ETS'd got out. We had some who were out 90 days after redeployment.

Oh. Ok. Got ya. Thanks....like i said...in my 7 years of being an army wife I had never heard "fenced in" LOL :D Thanks for clarifying. :D

If your unit is fenced in then you cannot request but they can choose to assign you. It is all about the needs of the army. My hubby is leaving for korea and we will see each other with ranges, schools, NTC and of course his pcs to Korea a total of 6 months for the three years but this will not be the first time that we have done this.

If you are fenced in you must write a letter to your commader with a good darn reason asking for the fence to be lifted. It is possible to lift it. But it is difficult...
In order for you to get out of "the damn fence" so to speak, the enlisted member would need to write a letter to his/her commander to have the fence lifted. It is possible to get the fence lifted, but everyones COC is different, and your specific reasons for the request are all taken into consideration. My husband is fenced in ever since he transfered to his unit 3 yrs ago. We have been here WAY too long. But will be asking for the lift soon due to a family members health. In this case all documentation would be needed IF they would even take his request into consideration. He spoke to his branch leader abt this and is looking onto possible slots at another installation to see what is available for him there.

i remember hearing that if you are fenced in that YOU cannont request orders but you can be put on orders...however your report date is usually after your "fenced in" period ends
