I got promoted to E6 last October. As stated in title, I am single. I was told to move out of the barracks, which i did, and I started to rent a room from a friend of mine. I was told multiple times by multiple sources that I didnt need a CNA or Request to Start BAH because I was an E6 now, and E6s (single or not) get BAH on Ft. Lewis. I deployed in November, and have been struggling the entire time ive been deployed to get my BAH, to no avail. I do not have a lease agree, due to the fact that I am just renting from a friend. Am I not entitled to BAH even though i was forced to leave the barracks (to which i have a memo stating when i left) or am I just getting screwed over?

I think you're getting screwed over! I'm not 100% sure but why do you need a lease? You could live on the streets if you wanted to, you're an E6! We never had to prove where we lived. Either way we were married but think of this, when you get it straightened out think of the fat check you'll get while overseas! Good luck and I hope someone has better info!

you just need proof of residence-like if you pay a bill i think. or you could get your friend to write up a month to month agreement.

i think it's their way of making sure you aren't living in your car and collecting bah, and to track down where you sleep.

you must be already doing this, but go to the finance office in waller hall.

i may be wrong though. i'm not a single soldier.

I would just have your friend type up something saying you rent a space from them. But yes, once it's straight, you will get the back pay, should be a nice chunk of money for you.

Go to your s1 with your les and say you are not getting your bah and they have to submit the inquiry to finance. If they won't do it tell your sgt or go to the first sgt or commander and make the s1 do it. You can walk into finance, when you getbacm but your coc can take care of it while ddeployed.

Be patient too! Finance has a way of taking a lifetime when it comes to giving money back but take it away in a heartbeat! My husband once was owed 4 months of jump pay and they kept 'losing' the paperwork we submitted over 3 times, so we gave up. We were E3, broke and inexperienced, eventually we learned to persist!

VolsChick --- 12 years ago -

Sandra that's not always true. We got married and the s1 wasn't giving finance the paperwork to stop my hubs meal deductions. After waiting for the s1 to do his job I walked into finance gave them all the documents s1 already had and it was stopped and we got paid back for everything in the next pay check. Finance gets a bad rap but sometimes the s1 can't do there job

We never went through S1 he went himself every time in benning. There's exceptions to everything, but I'm pretty sure it's much more common than not.

I do not have a lease agree

If they're telling you this is the reason you're not getting BAH, that's crap. They tried to pull the same BS with one of my husband's soldiers when he got married and didn't have a lease. Google it...there's some regulation that says you don't need one. I know I found it by Googling but I don't have it handy right now. If I can dig it up I'll post it here.

Yes, you do need the CNA along with other forms that you have to fill out and submit to finance. Your S1 should have the checklist and forms. It will still take some time because finance is behind and there are multiple E6 getting kicked of JBLM due to base policy. If it was an ARMY policy then it may be an automatic adjustment in pay.

Finance on jblm only works if you tried goi g to your s1first. Idk about other posts but here if youwalk into finance wwithout taking procedures first they won't help you at all.

I don't know if this will work because I'm a little unsure how to post pictures. If it doesn't send me a message and I'll text it to you.

The picture (in case it doesn't show up) is what I found back when my husband's soldier was having issues getting BAH without a lease. S1 was no help. Hubby took his soldier to finance and showed them what I found and the following month he started receiving BAH. And yes, it's true you're not supposed to go to finance on your own at JBLM. Which is crap IMO, especially if you have an S1 who won't get off their butts and help. Here you can go on your own and guess what? Things get resolved much faster! But if you walk in there with the right documentation and get lucky enough to get someone working who actually cares, they'll take care of you.

Okay I guess I can't get the picture to show up, but it is from the JBLM website and it specifically states a lease agreement is no longer necessary to start BAH.
