I was about to ask the same thing! My neighborhood is filled with smoke!

notfromhere --- 12 years ago -

The smell is bad but I don't want to close my window. Wonder what's happening.

snookumsx2 --- 12 years ago -

Same here and we have ash all over both our vehicles.

what area's are you in? i smell it and see the smoke in n.hillside

Kat --- 12 years ago -

I'm on Mcchord an it's horrible!

snookumsx2 --- 12 years ago -

I am on Clarkdale on lewis so near the commissary, was a thin layer of the ash, all I can think is they are doing a controlled burn? You think they would let us know when something like that is planned

Kat --- 12 years ago -

I saw on the new this morning where a furniture factory was in fire I'm Lakewood? So maybe that's it?

I'm close to the hospital on Main Post. No ash on my car or anything, but the smell is not nice. It does seem to be dissipating finally.

Yeah a 12,000 sq feet furniture warehouse burnt to the ground in Tacoma off 72nd street.

That's a lot of chemically treated kindling..

WHOA! That's insane! I'm so glad someone else beat me to this because I live in Greenwood and when I first caught the smell around 2PM, I thought my dryer was on fire. :p

At least I know where it's coming from and it isn't on post anywhere... I was worried someone's house was burning to the ground!

Yogis Mommy --- 12 years ago -

I don't think that much smoke and ash would be from a furniture warehouse ....my brother is a firefighter and I know the difference in smell between vegetation and structure....that smell was vegetation......

Yogis Mommy --- 12 years ago -

Especially from 72nd to post......

snookumsx2 --- 12 years ago -

so maybe all the ash that was covering my car was from something else. I didn't think it could make it this far. We thought someones house was on fire as well. hmmmmmmmm....

ColoradoNative --- 12 years ago -

That's true. It was definitely more of a woodsy burning smell to me, and I could see smoke around my neighborhood. Must have been a controlled burn or something... I wish I knew for sure because I was sneezing all afternoon! lol

When I lived on Ft. Bragg they did controlled burns all the time and never made a big deal out of it. There were tiny notices in the housing newsletter at the beginning of the season, and once when I drove by an area they were burning I saw they had signs on the road, but that was it. I could always smell it late in the day and at night and if you walked outside the air was thick with smoke, but I don't remember ashes covering everything. I'm on North Fort and can't smell anything.

Yogis Mommy --- 12 years ago -

Most likely controlled, yes. :D My nephew has done volunteer work with his dad at the FD and he jumped in the truck and went driving looking for it -- fire junky haha. Couldn't find it tho. :/

CSGray --- 12 years ago -

They've been doing "prescribed burns" out east gate road over the last few weeks. But that smell I got today over in New Hillside smelled like chemicals and hot varnish to me. Wasn't a "clean" burn for sure.

Sandra --- 12 years ago -

It was a 3 alarm fire so it probably was that because controlled fires dont last that little they usually go on longer and theres usually no ash falling

Sandra --- 12 years ago -

And it was a furniture factory which means lots of wood and chemicals so CS is right it was waaaay different

Chris P Bacon --- 12 years ago -

The article said 50 fire fighters were on the scene but couldn't get to close due to the intense heat.

Pandaroni --- 12 years ago -

Finally found it after searching for quite a while on google. Seems they misprinted the story. I was gonna say I know it wasn't FFD since we drove by it yesterday on our way back in town. Quite a few media sources printed and reported it as FFD but it was Grandwood Furniture. The location was misconstrued since they printed "a furniture factory had burned". Not that I'm glad that the other one burned, but I love FFD due to the reasonable prices and pretty good furniture.

Grandwood Furniture Fire

That's horrible. They lost everything! I hope they had GREAT insurance. Glad no one was hurt, including the fire fighters, that was apparently one of the largest fires they had responded to in some time.
