My niece is living with us, she has been since May. Her parents have given us temporary guardianship of her, but now they want us to be legal guardians. I called DEERS and was told we need court documents in order for us to put her in DEERS since she will now be a dependent of ours. If all parties agree with the arrangement, what is the process that I have to go through to make this as less painful and alot faster? How long will it take, my hubby will be deploying soon. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would go to the JAG office. Although you cannot use JAG lawyers for this kind of thing, they can give you legal advice and steer you in the right direction.

Hey if the other party can offer a signed over guardinship document, get that noterized. Bring it to the court house for authentisity approvel. Slap it on the deers desk. You should be goo
ld.

I went thru this for 3 months with my nephew....she's going to need actual custody papers to enroll her in DEERS, guardianship papers ARE NOT enough.....you're also going to need Command Sponsorship from your husbands unit to legally have her in your residence....then housing has to send that up along with your guardianship papers to get approval for her to live with you....It literally took us 3 months to get this sh!t done because housing dragged their feet and kept coming back saying we needed to fix something or needed additional paperwork...etc....just make sure all your documents are completely filled out and signed before you even go into housing, ID Cards or DEERS.

Yogis mommy is correct that you cannot get on Deers with guardianship papers. They want a court order from a judge because of the entitlements deers offers. I have had my nephew for 8 years and Fort Hood did not require anything other than the CPS placement paperwork so here in Washington we had to show the actual custody agreement signed by the judge allowing our nephew to live with us until his parents could provide for him. It is not enough to get him on deers because it is a temporary placement even though he has been with us for almost 9 years now. Please update on what you find out. In my situation neither parents will sign over custody to us but do not want to remove him either so it should be less expensive since the parents are working with you
