Okay so I have a general idea, but I need confirmation. The Army no longer flies out families. You would need to drive to your new location and you keep all receipts (food, lodge, gas) so that the military can reimburse you later. If you do decide to buy your own plane tickets, the military won't reimburse you. Does that sound correct?

sounds right to me. although this last time we got our money in advance. you can do a partial dity and weigh your car before and after and they will pay you some more. DH didn't want to fool with it last time, but i wish we had. We were packed the brim and even had a car top carrier. BEST OF LUCK!

I never knew that flying was an option and we have been in a long time lol. It's ok, i'd much rather drive at my own pace than fly out. I wonder why they no longer let people fly? What about families that don't have cars or car's that won't make the drive, is there an option for them?

It has not been an option except for special needs. Even when my dad was in you had to drive. Except when going OCONUS. My husband has been in almost 17 years and you have always had to drive CONUS. We have never had to show our receipts. We have always kept them, but never once asked to see them.

When we came to Washington in 2010, it was my husband's first duty station right out of AIT, but the Army didn't even give us the option to drive ourselves.

We were handed 3 plane tickets, told to set up JPPSO for our goods, & told that if we had a vehicle that we wanted to take, we'd have to ship it ourselves (but it was fully on our dime & would not get reimbursed)

There were neighbors that just PCS'd out & they shipped their stuff, & the Army bought their plane tickets because they sold their car. This was just within the last 4 months. So.... is this something new that they just started or what? If we'll have to drive if we PCS, I might have to start looking for a new car since our truck will barely make it to Seattle, let alone cross country :-/

Wow, maybe it's something they were trying to see if it were cheaper to fly people than pay them mileage/perdiem etc, but that's the first I've heard of anyone not going overseas, short of special situations, getting to fly. I did this almost 15 years as an army brat and over 20 as a wife and yep first I've heard.

One of my husbands friends went to Florida for green to gold and they paid for his plane ticket too. He paid for his car to be shipped because he didnt want to put all the extra miles on there. A one way ticket probably costs less than paying for the per diem, gas, and other random expenses so it makes sense.

School is different then a PCS.

I'm not sure, but I asked my husband about our friends that just left for KY 2 weeks ago & they were offered the chance to fly, but declined because they have 2 vehicles, 2 dogs, & 2 kids... they wanted to "make money" on the move.

Maybe it depends on where you are actually going to will depend if they offer you the chance to fly. We came here from FL & the neighbors that flew 4 mths ago went to Bragg... so who knows :-/

Either way, good luck with the PCS :-)

I'm sure it is, but he had the option of driving and they would have given him money for it as well. I'm just throwing it out there.
I'm also pretty sure that if you didn't have a reliable mode of transportation, they would fly you. How else would you get there?
