We have a family emergency and with airline prices right now because of the holidays we can't afford to go home. Does anyone have any good tips for getting cheaper plane tickets??? Any info would be helpful...Thanks! Also is there anywhere that gives a good military discount to fly??

Your best bet is to call the airline. When my father passed away we got a pretty good deal.

Thank you I will try that! What airline did you use?

JustcallmeSuz --- 13 years ago -

Most airlines will give a big reduction if there was a death in the family. Also, check with AER you can get a loan for tickets for emergency if need be!

call southwest and explain your situation, they helped us out last year when we had a family emergency, cut the cost of our tickets in half!

How did you get them to do that for you? I called them and they weren't willing to help us out and we have a redcross message and all.

We just called and told them we needed to ge home because we were mlitary all the way across the country and my husbands father had a brain anueryism. It was in March though so it might just be tough for them to get it down because it's the holiday.

Most airlines need proof now a days. Faxed letter from a dr is what a friend at work needed when her brother was in an accident and brian dead on life support. They were waiting for family to arrive before unplugging. No, airlines would help at all without a letter. This was less than two months ago.

Space A is the best way to go if you can. Since it is a family emergency you will take priority over everyone else. If there is not a base near were you are going maybe you can get close enough to drive or get cheaper air fair. You can call the ACS and they can give you more info.

There is also a train or bus, not ideal with children but it is always alot cheaper.

We had no luck last summer when my mil passed away, even with a the Red Cross message, we had to pay $1000 for my husband to fly home to Cali from Texas.

Just a thought, but you may be able to get airline tickets through the MWR travel site and put them on your AAFES Starcard, they do accept them and in this case it may be an option since you have the emergency.
