I don't know to much about the housing other then it looks really nice. You'll love the area and it's not too far from DC. We were stationed at Quantico and loved it.

I would do a direct flight. Having driven from 29 Palms, CA to Quantico, VA with 3 children. Let's say it wasn't an enjoyable drive. I'm all for flights now.:)
